Champions League round-up
Arsenal players celebrate Robert Pires' goal
Arsenal celebrate a comfortable win over Leverkusen
Champions League tables and statistics

Arsenal put their injury troubles behind them to overwhelm Bayer Leverkusen 4-1, with goals from Robert Pires, Thierry Henry, Patrick Vieira and Dennis Bergkamp.

The Gunners now lie second in Champions League Group D behind Deportivo la Coruna, who overcame Italian champions Juventus 2-0.

Arsenal began the match without a number of key defenders, but it soon became clear that the quality of the Gunners' attack more than made up for any holes in defence.

Inside five minutes Robert Pires was given time and space to open the scoring and Arsenal grasped control of the match.

Pires was allowed to pick up the ball on the halfway line and run unchallenged to the edge of the box from where he cut inside and shot low into the net.

It was only the beginning of a poor defensive display from the German side, as Arsenal's forward line of Sylvain Wiltord, Henry, Bergkamp and Pires created chances at will.

A typically slick passing movement gave Henry his seventh goal of the Champions League campaign, and Bergkamp looked to have put his side out of sight before half-time but his goal was ruled out for offside.

But Vieira was not to be denied and the Frenchman headed Arsenal's third moments after half time.

Bergkamp completed the scoring for Arsenal with a stunning chip over Leverkusen keeper.

Zoltan Sebescen salvaged some pride for the German side with a rasping volley from what looked like an impossible angle, but Arsenal were already out of sight. Click here for match report

Real joy

Deportivo la Coruna were less comfortable winners over Juventus, despite the Italian side having Edgar Davids sent off after coming on as a second-half substitute.

Diego Tristan gave the Spanish side the lead after just eight minutes and after Davids' departure, Djalma Feitosa Djalminha confirmed the win. Click here for match report

In Group C, Real Madrid became the first team to qualify for the quarter-final stages with a 2-1 win away to Porto.

Santiago Solari settled the nerves with a fine headed goal after seven minutes before Ivan Helguera put his side 2-0 ahead.

Nuno Capucho grabbed one back for the home side before half-time but they were unable to find an equaliser. Click here for match report

And Real look likely to be joined by Panathinaikos in the last eight.

Star striker Michalis Konstantinou scored twice for the Greek side to give them a 2-1 win over Sparta Prague with Michael Klein netting a consolation goal. Click here for match report
