Hansen: Leeds will bounce back
![]()
BBC Sport's Alan Hansen reflects on Leeds' Champions League run.
It was a fairytale for Leeds to reach the semi-final of the Champions League, so I don't think David O'Leary will be too disappointed to lose to Valencia. Although they would have liked to reach the final, they can console themselves with the fact they were the top English team in this year's competition. O'Leary has compiled an impressive squad with some quality players that will be at the club for a long time to come. But a bad start to the season may ultimately cost Leeds a place in the Champions League for next season.
With Liverpool and Ipswich desperately chasing the all-important third place behind Manchester United and Arsenal, Leeds could well lose out come the end of the season. But one thing I'm certain of is that they will be right up there with three other teams chasing for the Premiership and the Champions League next season. But O'Leary must try to calm Alan Smith down. The striker has undeniable talent - but he possesses a temperament of equal unpredictability. His challenge right at the end of the semi-final against Valencia was down to pure frustration. The boy has got to learn to control that frustration and just turn the other way. |
