Valencia ready for 'battle'

Valencia players train at Elland Road
Valencia coach Hector Cuper has surprised onlookers by ordering his players to flail their elbows and pull each others shirts during training this week.

The show of force was an attempt get used to the tactics he thinks Leeds will employ in the Champions League semi-final first leg at Elland Road on Wednesday.

Valencia's 6ft 7in Norwegian striker John Carew said: "We have to practise this type of situation when we play in England because the defenders are incredibly hard."

Referring to the quarter-final against Arsenal, which the Spaniards won on away goals, Carew said: "There was a battle on the pitch and the contact from our opponents was constant.

"However, in spite of everything, we must be intelligent and not get drawn into battle."

Valencia's Argentinian international Roberto Ayala agreed: "Leeds have demonstrated they are indicative of the English style of play.

"They have a great desire to win but also play hard. They are fighters.

Earlier this week, the Spanish sports daily Marca led with pictures of the rough-house tactics being used at Valencia's training sessions under the headline "Thuggery".

In the accompanying story it was claimed that Leeds central defenders Rio Ferdinand and Dominic Matteo were among the dirtiest players in the Premier League.

Ironically, Valencia have eight players just one yellow card away from suspension, while Leeds have only five.

Argentinian Cuper claimed his players had simply been practising shielding the ball during the sessions.

He also said he did not mind his side being favourites going into the game.

"We are going into the game with the mentality we will win," he said.

"I believe in my players and my team and I am happy to be favourites - whatever predictions other people make don't worry me."
