Keane: We're not good enough

Manchester United captain Roy Keane has claimed it may be time to break up the team that won the European Cup just two years ago.

The Irishman's remarks come in the wake of the disappointing Champions League exit against Bayern Munich.

Keane feels the team may have had its day, after United lost 2-1 in the Olympic Stadium to complete a 3-1 aggregate defeat in the quarter-finals.

It is the second consecutive year in which the English champions have gone out in the last eight.

It's no good winning the Premier League, we need to step up a level in Europe
  Roy Keane

"The players gave it their all tonight but we are just not good enough and maybe it's time to move on," Keane said.

"Maybe it's the end of the road for this team, although I'm not sure," Keane told MUTV.

"You have to face the facts and I think the signs have been there this season - PSV, Anderlecht, Panathinaikos - while we were also lucky to get to the first stage even."

He had suggested before the Bayern game that heads may roll and now he feels changes are needed.

"It's no good winning the Premier League, we need to step up a level in Europe," Keane added.

Sir Alex Ferguson
Ferguson gave his defence a slating

"I keep going on about Real Madrid but they're setting the standards we have to match."

Meanwhile, manager Sir Alex Ferguson could not hide his disappointment after his side's exit.

Trailing 1-0 from the first leg at Old Trafford, United immediately handed the initiative to their hosts when Elber swept in Michael Tarnat's cross from the left.

"We played nice football but there was not enough of a goal threat," Ferguson reflected.

It just would not go in and we were a bit unlucky

Ryan Giggs breached Bayern's defence early in the second half but, by then, the Premiership champions had already conceded a further goal from Mehmet Scholl.

"Our defending in the first half cost us," Ferguson said. "It was a terrible start."

But he was happier with the way his players responded, most notably Roy Keane - the "best player in Britain".

"In the second half we expressed ourselves as you would expect and we had some good chances.

"Teddy Sheringham had a couple, as did Andy Cole, but it just would not go in and we were a bit unlucky," he concluded.
