Champions League round-up

Leeds and Arsenal boosted their chances of reaching the Champions League quarter-finals with fine victories on Tuesday.

Leeds produced an amazing comeback to beat Anderlecht 2-1 with excellent goals from Ian Harte and Lee Bowyer.

David O'Leary's side looked the most likely to score in what began as a drab match.

Things finally livened up when Harry Kewell came on early in the second half.

But it was Anderlecht who went ahead when Alin Stoica broke free and scored in the 65th minute.

The goal spurred on the Belgian visitors and it seemed as though Leeds would have to accept defeat.

That was until Harte made up for an earlier miss, with a blistering long-range shot to equalise.

And 12 minutes later, Bowyer slotted home the winner to give Leeds three vital points. Match report

Arsenal clung on to a 1-0 lead over Lyon to keep their Champions League hopes alive.

The French side enjoyed most of the possession in the first half, with strikers Steve Marlet and Sonny Anderson causing problems for Arsenal's Tony Adams and Gilles Grimandi.

But the Gunners nearly went ahead after Kanu's half-volley put Thierry Henry through, only for the French star to shave the post.

Henry made amends in the second half when he nodded in Ashley Cole's teasing cross from the left.

The home side continued to pile on the pressure, but never produced the much-needed equaliser. Match report

Real Madrid nearly fell victim to the superb counter-attacking of Lazio before sealing the game 3-2 in the dying minutes with a penalty.

Lazio gave the home side an early shock when Argentinian striker Hernan Crespo put Lazio ahead after just four minutes.

But Real Madrid showed why they are the defending champions by producing an equaliser in the 32nd minute with a low shot past goalkeeper Peruzzi.

The Spanish side then stepped up the pressure, but had to wait until the 82nd minute for a goal from Helguera.

Lazio refused to give in and came back on the counter-attack a minute later with an excellent strike from Gottardi.

But a penalty, knocked in off the post, by Portugese star Luis Figo finally killed off the plucky Italian visitors who are now virtually out of contention for a last eight place. Match report

Bayern Munich edged ahead late in the game to beat Spartak Moscow 1-0.

It took 79 minutes for the German Bundesliga leaders to break the deadlock.

Brazilian striker Giovane Elber struck to leave the Spartak Moscow floundering. Match report
