Six beat bid deadline for Nations Cup 2006
The Ivorian national stadium in Abidjan last hosted the Nations Cup final in 1984
Ivory Coast is hoping Abidjan will hold the final in 2006
Namibia has disappointed many fans in Southern Africa by deciding not to put in a bid for the 2006 Nations Cup.

FA president Petrus Damaseb said they had not being able to get sufficient backing from the Namibian government.

"When we learned of South Africa withdrawing its bid, we saw an opportunity to bid and expressed our intention to Caf.

"But any bid has to have the support of the country. We asked our government to underwrite the bid, but they felt they could not at this time.

In the event South Africa did not withdraw its bid for the tournament, which is being used to select Africa's representatives at the World Cup for the first time.

This controversial move is designed to cut down on fixture congestion by removing the need for continent-wide World Cup qualifiers.

But it gives the host nation a huge advantage, hence the unprecedented interest in holding the tournament.

Caf's deadline of 31 March has been met by six countries.

Senegal's Minister of Sport said they would be entering a bid, but that appears not to have materialised.

Of the countries in the running, only Gabon has not hosted the Nations Cup before.

Caf's executive committee will announce the winner in September.
