Caf set to punish ref attackers
Caf will announce their verdict next week
Two African footballers are facing lengthy bans after attacks on referees in African club competitions in recent weeks.
Emad Al Beskini, who plays for the Libyian club Al Ahli, and Abdallah Rageb of Egypt's Al Masry will both find out their punishments when Caf's competition committee meets next week in Cairo. Al Beskini is awaiting the committee's decision following an alleged attack on Somali referee Osman Mohamed after an African Cup Winners' Cup match against Al Mehalla of Egypt. Mohamed dismissed three Al Ahli players, including Beskini, in the match, which the Libyans lost 2-0. After he blew the final whistle he was attacked and had to be rescued by Egyptian police. Meanwhile, Ragab is alleged to have kicked Zimbabwean referee Wallace Zimunya after Al Masry's Caf Cup second round, first leg tie in Botswana earlier this month. At the time several Egyptian players surrounded the referee after he ruled out a goal for Al Mehalla before allowing a controversial fourth goal for Botswana Defence Force XI. The referee was allegedly kicked on the legs, and the Rajab was identified by two assistant referees as the perpetrator. |
