Nigeria defender Isaac Okoronkwo has begun trials with English Premiership club Newcastle United.

Okoronkwo, who partners Everton centre-back Jospeh Yobo at international level, is currently on the books of Ukraine side Shakhtar Donetsk.

If Okoronkwo impresses, he is exprected to cost Newcastle between 2m and 3m.

Newcastle manager Bobby Robson is keen to see an improvement in the defensive capabilities of his team - although they are eighth in the Premiership, only the bottom five sides have conceded more goals.

Okoronkwo will be joined on Thursday by 21-year-old Chinese goalkeeper An Qi, also on trial from Dalian Shide.
