Sierra Leone interim coach Lars Olof Mattsson has been given an extended contract to lead the national team.

Mattsson's deal has been extended to take him to the end of the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.

His original contract covered only three weeks, as he took charge of the game against Niger last month, which they lost 3-1.

Sierra Leone are third in their qualifying group ahead of the reigning champions, Egypt.

Despite the defeat in Niger, Sierra Leone Sports Minister Paul Kamara told BBC Sport that retaining the coach was the right decision.

"You can't judge a coach in just one match and Mattson had only four days with the players, even though we contracted him for three weeks," said Kamara.

"We believe Mattsson is a very good coach and he is very enthusiastic about the job."

The minister said an agreement had been reached with Mattsson for him to stay until the end of the qualifiers, although his terms and conditions had not yet been determined.

Mattsson will also be given the chance to choose his own assistant after a row between him and his predecessor Christian Cole, which marred the trip to Niger.
