Lito Vidigal has signed a two-year contract to coach Angola

Former Angola defender Lito Vidigal has been named as the coach of the 2006 World Cup finalists.

The 41-year-old signed a two-year contract on Saturday to coach the Palancas Negras.

He takes over from his compatriot Zeca Amaral who was in charge of the side on temporary basis.

"Zeca Amaral has requested to join a different institution and we can not stop that," Angola Football Federation boss Justino Fernandes said.

"The situation led us to pick another Angolan coach, who also has a good CV."

After a playing and coaching career spanning more than a decade in Portugal, Vidigal has been appointed to revive the national team.

The former defender has been a coach in Portugal since retiring from his playing career in 2004.

His last coaching appointment was with Uniao Leiria and was previously in charge of Portimonense, Ribeirao and Estrela Amadora

He played for Portuguese sides Campomaiorense, Belenenses and Santa Clara and was a member of the Angola national team in the 1990s.

Angola's fortunes have slumped since a first World Cup appearance five years ago in Germany.

They suffered a 3-0 drubbing by Uganda in their opening 2012 African Cup of Nations qualifier last September but managed to beat Guinea Bissau 1-0.

The Palancas Negras will play Kenya in March and June as they hope to get the campaign back on track.
