BBC African Player of the Year award into home straight

2010 BBC African Footballer of the Year nominees
Gyan, Ayew, Eto'o, Toure and Drogba have been nominated for the award

The search to find the 2010 BBC African Footballer of the Year is almost over.

Fans have until Friday 10 December to vote for their most outstanding African player of 2010.

The five candidates in the hunt for the prestigious gong are Asamoah Gyan and Andre 'Dede' Ayew, both from Ghana.

Cameroon and Inter Milan striker Samuel Eto'o, Manchester City's Ivorian midfielder Yaya Toure and his compatriot Didier Drogba, who plays for Chelsea, are also included on the list.

But it might not be a straightforward choice this time round as the competition is fiercer than ever.

BBC African sports editor Farayi Mungazi said: "Many football matches are won or lost in the dying minutes.

"So it's possible that this year's winner might be decided by last-minute votes, so it's important for everyone to cast their votes."

Voting for the award is done via text and online.

The winner will be announced on 17 December on the BBC's African sports programme Fast Track.

Last year's winner was Drogba after his consistent form and goals for club and country.
