Equatorial Guinea climb Fifa's women's rankings

Equatorial Guinea celebrate scoring a goal at the AWC
AWC runners-up Equatorial Guinea have risen up the global rankings

Equatorial Guinea have climbed eight places in the latest Fifa women's rankings, after finishing second in the recent African championship.

They are now 62nd in the global table and fourth in the African list.

It is the highest ever position in the table for Equatorial Guinea, even though they won the African Championship two years ago.

Champions Nigeria remain 27th in the world rankings and have confirmed their place at the top of the regional table.

Ghana have dropped out of the world's top-50 after a disappointing performance at the AWC, in which they failed to reach the semi-finals.

The hosts of the AWC, South Africa, have also dropped a couple of places in the Fifa list - down to 59th in the world - but stay just ahead of Equatorial Guinea in the African table.

The USA are the world's top-rated side, followed by Germany and Brazil - but the Americans' lead at the top has been cut considerably after they failed to qualify automatically for next year's Women's World Cup.

They now face a play-off match against Italy for the right to go to Germany 2011.

Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea will be Africa's representatives at the tournament.
