Malawi thump Chad in qualifiers

Msowoya scored two goals for Malawi in their win over Chad

Malawi moved to second in Group K of the 2012 African Cup of Nations qualifiers with an emphatic 6-2 win over Chad in Blantyre on Saturday.

Two goals each from Chiukepo Msowoya Esau Kanyenda helped the Flames to the impressive victory.

The other goals for the home side were scored by Jimmy Zakazaka and Robert Ng'ambi.

The visitors got their goals through striker Ezechiel Ndouassel and France-based midfielder Marius Mbaiam.

The win takes Malawi to second place on six points as group leaders Botswana have ten points.

Togo will play Tunisia in the group's other game this weekend.

Group K is the only group with five teams in the qualifiers for the tournament to be held in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea.

Malawi will host Togo in their next game in March 2011.

Elsewhere, striker Mounir El-Hamdaoui scored two minutes before half-time for Morocco to beat Tanzania 1-0 in Dar-es-Salaam on in Group D on Saturday.

El-Mandaoui capitalized on a lapse in defence to fire a left-foot volley past stunned goalkeeper Juma Kaseja.

Morocco, after starting qualifying with a scoreless draw against Central Africa, improved to 4 points after the important away win.

Tanzania are still on one point.

Ivory Coast kept alive their dreams of topping Group H to qualify after a 1-0 away win over Burundi in Bujumbura on Saturday.

The Elephants won the game thanks to a first half goal scored by Romaric Ndri whose free-kick in the 33rd minute flew past the home side's goalkeeper.

The victory gives them the maximum six points after two rounds of matches in their group.

Cameroon were held 1-1 by visiting DR Congo in Garoua in Group E also on Saturday.

The visitors took the lead on 37 minutes when Herita Ilunga took advantage of an Indomitable Lions defensive slip-up but Nkulukutu gifted the home side the equaliser ten minutes after the break when he scored an own goal.

Meanwhile, Kenya's hopes of qualifying for the 2012 tournament suffered a severe blow when they were held to a 0-0 draw by Uganda in Nairobi on Saturday.

The Harambee Stars were beaten 1-0 by minnows Guinea Bissau in their opening Group J game last month and they were hoping to revive their fortune with a win at home.

But the visitors were resolute and held out for a goalless draw to stay on top of the table to four points.

Angola revived their hopes when they beat Guinea Bissau 1-0 in the group's other game in Luanda on Saturday.

Gilberto got the Palancas Negras' only goal when he converted a 22nd minute penalty after Manucho was fouled in the box.

The win took Angola to third on the table with three points but Guinea Bissau, who also have three points, are second because of their better goal difference.

Kenya are fourth with one point.
