CAS rules on Kenya football dispute

The KFL has been declared the governing body of Kenyan football

Kenya Football Federation (KFF) has lost its bid to be recognised as the body governing football in Kenya.

The Court of Arbitration for Sports (CAS) has instead ruled that KFF's rival, Kenya Football Limited is in charge of football in the country.

The dispute over the leadership of the sport has been raging for over six years, after the sport's world governing body Fifa suspended the KFF citing government interference.

In 2006 Fifa and KFF reached an agreement with the Kenyan government to ensure the FA's independence.

Both parties again fell out several months later with Fifa saying KFF and the Kenyan government had not kept their end of the deal.

Eventually a group of football administrators set up a rival body KFL which was recognised by Fifa in 2008.

This led KFF suing Fifa for failing to recognize it and extending its (Fifa's) support to a limited liability company, the Football Kenya Limited (FKL), that is run by three officials.

But in its ruling on Tuesday, CAS said it was dismissing KFF's appeal and asked that KFL continue to be recognised as the governing body of Kenyan football
