Fifa denies Amrabat switch reports

Fifa has rubbished reports that Holland youth international Nordin Amrabat has been cleared to play for Morocco.

The purported international switch was widely reported in Morocco last week.

But football's world governing body has dismissed the claim insisting the 22-year-old PSV Eindhoven player has not applied to play for Morocco.

"With regard to the player Amrabat, Fifa has not received any correspondence regarding this player," a Fifa spokesman told BBC Sport.

Amrabat, whose parents hail from the north African country, met Atlas Lions coach Hassan Moumen last year to discuss the switch.

Even though he agreed to play for Morocco, Amrabat did not turn up for their 2010 World Cup qualifier against Cameroon even though he was named in the squad.

The winger, who played three matches for a Holland youth side, could not turn up for the game because he had then not applied for Fifa to clear him to play for Morocco.

Amrabat and the Morocco Football Federation must write to Fifa before the quest for international switch is considered.

Fifa has removed the age limit for players who want to switch national allegiance.

Previously players who had represented one country at youth level had to make the choice to change by the age of 21.

Amrabat started his career at amateur club HSV De Zuidvogels before he was signed by giants Ajax Amsterdam but injuries limited his first team opportunities.

He revived career at VVV Venlo in 2007 before he was signed by PSV Eindhoven last year.
