Young Cameroon midfielder Joel Matip has signed a three-and-a-half-year contract with German Bundesliga side, Schalke.

The 18-year-old, who joined the club ten years ago, is a product of the Schalke youth system.

Matip made his Bundesliga debut in November away against Bayern Munich, scoring the equaliser in a 1-1 draw.

He has since played in 12 league games, scoring two goals.

Matip has also opted to play his international football for Cameroon, after meeting up with the national team ahead of Wednesday's friendly against Italy.

The midfielder has a German mother while his father is the Cameroonian footballer Jean Matip and is eligible to play for both the country of his birth and the Indomitable Lions.

Germany's technical director Matthias Sammer said in December that Matip had been approached about representing Germany.

The teenager then turned down a Cameroon call-up for January's Africa Cup of Nations in Angola, but has now decided to commit his future to the Indomitable Lions.

Matip has an older brother Marvin currently on loan with Karlsruher SC in the second tier of German football.
