Pressure mounts on Ivory Coast coach Vahid Halilhodzic

Bosnia-born Frenchman Vahid Halilhodzic will find out by Friday if he is still the coach of Ivory Coast.

A member of the Ivorian federation has told the BBC that a decision is expected by the end of the week.

And Valilhodzic's position seems even less certain given that he has failed to attend Fifa's pre-World Cup workshop at Sun City, despite being named on the latest list of attendees.

Two European coaches are reported to have been contacted over the post.

Halilhodzic's position as Ivory Coast coach was thrown into doubt after Belgian Eric Gerets claimed that he has held talks with the West Africans over the post.

Reports in Holland also suggest that Guus Hiddink could coach the Elephants only at the World Cup in June.

Halilhodzic's position has been in question since the Elephants bombed out of the Africa Cup of Nations.

Gerets, coach of Saudi side Al Hilal, says he has rejected the offer to lead the west Africans at the World Cup.

"I've looked at it but I cannot combine the two jobs,'' Gerets told Laatste Nieuws.

"I have therefore decided not to accept the proposal from Ivory Coast. If you want to work professionally in a club, you need a lot of time.''

Even though Gerets has ruled himself out of the job, pressure is mounting on Halilhodzic as reports of Dutchman Hiddink taking over the Ivorian post in gaining momentum.

The reports in Holland claim that Hiddink will be allowed to leave his role as Russia coach early to be allowed to coach Ivory Coast at World Cup in South Africa in June.

Hiddink will then take over as Turkey boss in August.

There was anger in the West African country after the Elephants' poor showing at last month's Africa Cup of Nations.

The team star-studded team was eliminated by Algeria in the quarter finals of the tournament in Angola.

Ivory Coast face a tough task at the World Cup in South Africa in June as they have been drawn to play Brazil, Portugal and North Korea in Group G.
