Binya has been drafted into the Lions team to replace Assou-Ekotto

Cameroon coach Paul Le Guen has called up defender Gilles Augustin Binya as a replacement for Benoit Assou-Ekotto who is out of this month's Africa Cup of Nations due to injury.

Binya is currently on loan from Portuguese side Benfica to Neuchatel Xamax in the Swiss first division.

Assou-Ekotto is set to miss most of January after suffering a groin strain.

The 25-year-old was substituted in the 88th minute of Spurs' 2-0 victory over West Ham United on Monday.

He will have an injection next week for the injury but it is understood he will not require an operation.

Assou-Ekotto's absence will be a huge blow for Cameroon as he has been playing well for Spurs.

Spurs' manager Harry Redknapp believes it is also a big loss for the club.

"Benoit is having an an injection on Monday," Redknapp said. "And he will be out for a few weeks."

"He has been terrific. It's a big blow to us," he added.

Assou-Ekotto moved to Tottenham from Lens in 2006 and after a slow start at White Hart Lane has made the left-back position his own.
