Egypt revive their World Cup hopes

Egypt striker Mohammed Aboutrika
Aboutrika scored a brace for Egypt

Six-times African champions Egypt have kept their World Cup hopes alive with a stirring victory over Rwanda in Cairo.

The Pharaohs beat the Amavubi 3-0 on Sunday night, with Mohammed Aboutrika scoring a brace.

Egypt desperately needed to win this match, after securing just one point from their previous two matches in Group C.

There was no sense of urgency by the Egypt side during a lacklustre first half.

After a stirring half-time talk from the Egypt coach, Hassan Shehata, the African champions showed their mettle as 2008 BBC African Footballer of the year Aboutrika opened the scoring.

Hosny Abdrabou made it 2-0 in the 76th minute when he scored from a penalty.

Deep into injury time, Aboutrika gave the fans something extra to cheer as he made the score 3-0.

Egypt now lie in second place in Group C with four points.

Their North African rivals Algeria top the group with seven.
