Kallon hopes his new foundation will help the children of Sierra Leone

Sierra Leone's veteran striker Mohamed Kallon is setting up a new charity to help children in the country.

The Mohamed Kallon Children's Foundation (MKCF) is aimed at taking children off the streets.

Sierra Leone has a large number of street children as a result of the long civil war the country suffered.

Kallon told BBC Sport he decided to act because he knows how difficult living in the streets is, having experienced it himself.

"It's my dream to help street children to live a better life because I've tasted street life before and I know what it means," he said.

"Also the foundation is a way of paying back to my country for making me who I am today."

Kallon left home at a young age for life in the streets in the name of playing football in the mini-leagues of Freetown.

"I hope to take about 150 children off the streets in a year's time, build a home for them, give them good education and health care," he said.

"The foundation is here to stay, I'll continue with it even if I retire as a footballer."

He is raising money through the sale of his autobiography.

The former Leone Stars captain and Monaco star recently came to the end of a contract with Dubai-based club Al-Shaab.
