El Hadary banned for four months

Egypt goalkeeper Essam El Hadary
Essam El Hadary faces a four month ban from playing football

Football's world governing body, Fifa, has banned Egypt goalkeeper Essam El Hadary for four months following his transfer to Swiss club FC Sion.

Fifa's Dispute Resolution Chamber has sanctioned both Sion and El Hadary over the controversial move from Egyptian club Al Ahly in February 2008.

As well as the ban the club and the player are responsible for paying a transfer fee of over US$1.25m to Ahly.

El Hadary recently told Sion that he wanted to leave and return to Egypt.

His ban will start at the beginning of the next season for which ever club he eventually moves to.

However he is free to play in Egypt's 2010 World Cup qualifier in Algeria on Sunday and should be clear to take part in the Confederations Cup that begins on 14 June in South Africa.

Sion have also been banned from registering any new players in the next two transfer windows.

Lars Gansaeuer, Sion's public relations officer told the BBC that they will be appealing to world sport's highest court the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), over the sanctions.

Originally Sion offered Al Ahly US$400,000 for the player, equivalent to the remaining two years of his contract, an offer which is in line with a decision taken by CAS in January 2008.

Gansaeuer also insisted to the BBC that there was an agreement between Sion and Ahly over the transfer of El Hadary.

That ruling awarded Scottish Premier League side Hearts only the residual value of Andy Webster's contract after the defender unilaterally broke it to join English Premier League team Wigan.

Egyptian side Ahly have always maintained the transfer was illegal.

They point to article 16 of Fifa's Regulations for the Status and Transfer of Players which states simply: "A contract cannot be unilaterally terminated during the course of a season."
