Ngassa tries for Tanzania history

Ngassa will make history for Tanzania should his trials succeed at West Ham

Tanzanian fans are hoping that the long wait for one of their players to land a major European contract could soon be over.

No Tanzanian has ever played in one of Europe's top leagues, but player regarded as the best in the country, Mrisho Ngassa, has a chance of changing that.

Ngassa has been invited for a two-week trial at English Premier League club West Ham United, beginning on 13 April.

"I have been receiving calls from different people, all congratulating me and urging me to work hard and remain in England," he told BBC Sport.

The 20-year-old winger, who has helped his club Young Africans win this year's league title, said he is now trying to avoid injury and also training very hard.

His speed and dribbling skills make him a major goal creator and scorer.

Ngassa's agent, Yusuph Bakhresa, said West Ham were impressed by the player at the African Nations Championship in Ivory Coast in February.

El Merriekh of Sudan and Norwegian club Lov Ham have made offers for Ngassa, but he is looking for something bigger.

If he passes the trials at West Ham, it will be a a milestone achievement for the country's football fans to celebrate.
