Michel leaves Mamelodi Sundowns

Former France, Morocco and Ivory Coast coach Henri Michel has parted company with South African club Mamelodi Sundowns.

His departure comes a day after he had to be driven away by riot police to escape angry fans after his team were knocked out of the South African Cup.

"A gentleman's agreement was concluded with Henri Michel in terms of which his services as head coach will come to an end," a club statement said.

A witness on Sunday saw Michel being escorted by heavily-armed policemen at Pretoria's Super Stadium.

The 61-year-old was then put into a police vehicle before being driven away as irate fans gave chase.

Sundowns fans chanted "Michel must go" after the Cup holders suffered a 1-0 defeat after extra time to unfancied Platinum Stars.

Sunday's loss followed a 4-1 defeat by champions SuperSport United in the Pretoria derby on Thursday.

That result effectively ended Sundowns' championship hopes.

Michel has coached extensively across Africa and only took over at Sundowns in October and has had varied results with an expensive squad.

Angry fans had also accosted the billionaire Sundowns owner Patrice Motsepe, demanding the sacking of the French coach.

Sundowns were not the only top side to be kicked out of the South African Cup.

Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates went out on Saturday.
