Nigerian club Heartland FC have sacked Bulgarian coach Mitko Dobrev, citing differences with the management and a poor run of results as the reasons behind the dismissal.

Heartland trail league leaders Bayelsa United by three points and begin their African Champions League campaign, against Black Star of Liberia, at the end of January.

The Owerri team's manager Emeka Iwuagwu said the club could no longer work with the Bulgarian coach.

"We have asked Dobrev to leave. Since he returned to the team, we have struggled, losing matches we ought to have won," he said.

"He is also not willing to work with his local assistants. We have paid him off as stipulated by his contract."

Iwuagwu also accused Dobrev of setting up trials in Bulgaria for two of the side's key players - Kabiru Alausa and Emmanuel Omodiagbe - without the permission of the club.

The Bulgarian was suspended earlier in the season for overstaying a leave granted to him to attend a coaching course in Europe.

Dobrev teamed up with Heartland in August 2007 from Ghana's Hearts of Oak and guided them to a runners-up domestic league finish.

His contract was due to run out in July.
