Kimanzi sacked as Kenya coach

Kenya's national coach has been sacked, only days after taking the team to the final of the Cecafa Cup.

Francis Kimanzi's dismissal comes just weeks before the Harambee Stars embark on the final leg of qualifying for the World Cup in 2010.

Football Kenya Ltd. (FKL), the game's ruling body in the country, said it was making the move "in the best interests of the national team".

Kimanzi has been replaced by former Harambee Stars defender John Ogolla.

The dismissal of the coach comes after he refused to lead Kenya in a friendly against Egypt in Cairo next week.

"Kimanzi doesn't want to honour international matches," FKL's secretary-general Sammy Obingo told the BBC.

"He requests for matches [then] when you arrange a match he turns around to say no."

In response, Francis Kimanzi told the BBC's Swahili Service that his players were tired after the completion of the Cecafa Cup.

He also said the squad would have been a weakened one because his best players would have returned to their club sides to prepare for the start of the African Champions League.

Obingo also said that Kimanzi's behaviour during the Cecafa Cup was disappointing, notably in failing to talk to the media after some games.

"A coach knows that in an international match he must give match analysis interviews, [but] the coach was refusing and he was not giving any reason," Obingo said.

Kimanzi's case is that he talked in all press conferences except one and that he did not try and avoid being questioned.

Kimanzi is also the coach of Kenya's league champions, Mathare United.

Kenya will play Nigeria, Tunisia and Mozambique in the final round of qualifying for the Africa Cup of Nations and World Cup in 2010.
