Tanzania qualified for their first major tournament in 28 years with victory over Sudan in the second leg of their final qualifying round game in the African Nations Championship (CHAN).

A 2-1 away win on Saturday in the competition where teams may field only locally-based players put Tanzania through 5-2 on aggregate.

Tanzania have been firing blanks since making it to the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations finals.

Sudan fired coach Mohammed Abdallah Mazda following what was their first home defeat since 2005.

Henry Joseph and Nurdin Bakari scored for Tanzania, with Sudan's goal coming from Khalid Hassan.

"I am very happy and proud, Tanzanian football is now going up," said Tanzania coach Marcio Maximo.

"After this result, I think a real chance has come to the players to develop their professional career and improve their lives."

Zimbabwe beat South Africa 2-0 in Harare to go through 3-0 on aggregate.

Goals in each half from Zhaimu Jambo and Clement Matawu ensured a triumphant return for recently-reappointed coach Sunday Chidzambwa, who took Zimbabwe to the 2004 Nations Cup finals.

Ghana went through in Calabar after holding hosts Nigeria to a 0-0 draw, leaving it 3-2 on aggregate.

Zambia were the first team to qualify for the CHAN finals, to be held in Ivory Coast next February, beating Angola 2-1 in Chililabombwe for a 3-1 aggregate victory.

Given Singuluma opened the scoring for Zambia, with Love equalising from the spot and William Njobvu getting Zambia's second in the 90th minute.

Libya beat Morocco 3-0 in Tripoli, to qualify 4-3 on aggregate, with goals from Mohamed Zaabia, Ahmed al-Zawi and Ahmed Sadd.

Senegal beat Guinea 3-1 in a penalty shoot-out after Alpha Oumar Sow's goal gave them a 1-0 home win in Dakar, and making it 1-1 on aggregate.

DR Congo beat Cameroon 1-0 to qualify 3-0 on aggregate, after gaining a surprise away victory in the first leg.
