The German Football Association has banned a third-division player for five matches for a racial slur towards a Nigerian player.

Torsten Ziegner who plays for Carl-Zeiss Jena, was sent off late in Saturday's match against Eintracht Braunschweig after racial abuse directed at Nigerian Kingsley Onuegbu.

Ziegner apologised to Onuegbu after the match and said the insult came in the "heat of the battle".

He also accepted Tuesday's ban by the German FA without appeal, saying he was sorry for losing control and denied that he was racist.

Police in Braunschweig said they had opened an investigation after seeing reports about the incident in the media.
