Former winners Zamalek of Egypt could feature in the 2009 Champions League despite failing to qualify for the annual competition.
League winners Al Ahly and runners-up Ismailia filled the slots reserved for the north African country, but the latter opted for the less prestigious but more lucrative and shorter Arab Champions League.
Egyptian football authorities forbid clubs competing in the African and Arab competitions so Zamalek, third behind Ismailia on goal difference on the final standings, have applied to fill the gap.
The 'White Knights', who are seeking to turn around their dwindling fortunes, have won the African Champions League five times.
Their record is only matched by bitter Cairo rivals Ahly, who will add a sixth title if they defeat Coton Sport Garoua of Cameroon in the 2008 final next month.
