Everton defender Joseph Yobo will miss Nigeria's World Cup qualifier against South Africa on Saturday after pulling out of the squad with an ankle injury.

The 27-year-old aggravated the long-standing problem in Saturday's English Premier League defeat at the hands of Portsmouth.

Everton have said that Yobo may be sidelined for one to two weeks.

"I have been told to rest the leg to prevent a terrible outcome because I have been forcing it," said Yobo.

"The Nigeria Football Federation has been notified already and I must confess it hurts me to even train with it.

"I have been taking painkillers and it's not great for the body."

Nigeria captain Nwankwo Kanu, who has yet to play this season, will also miss the game against South Africa.

Obafemi Martins and Jon Mikel Obi are also out of the 2010 World Cup qualifier because of injury.

The Super Eagles have already earned a place in the second qualifying phase as winners of Group Four.
