The Football Association of Zambia (Faz) has indefinitely suspended all domestic league matches following the death of the country's president Levy Mwanawasa.
President Mwanawasa, who died on Tuesday in a French hospital, was the Association's patron.
Faz general secretary George Kasengele announced league action has been cancelled as part of a period of national mourning.
"This is to honour and respect the memory of our President, whose support for football was demonstrated through his personal love for the sport and through his government's continued support to the game," he said.
Kasengele called on the entire football family to pray and remain united following the President's death.
The government has called a seven-day period of national mourning.
