I can still help Lone Star - Weah

George Weah
Weah was the 1995 World Footballer of the Year
Former Liberia captain and World Player of the Year George Weah says that he still has a role to play with the national team.

Weah is currently in the US studying, ruling out a full-time position with the Lone Star.

But he told the BBC's Fast Track programme that he is disappointed that Liberia coach Antoine Hey is not making use of his knowledge.

"I can give technical assistance, I can work with the coaches, I can work with the players, to speak to them, to inspire them - they need that," said Weah.

"I called him [Hey] to say I'd identified some players, but the coach said 'no' - he wanted to work with the people that he'd got."

"So if he doesn't have a result, that's his business."

Liberia played at the Africa Cup of Nations in 1996 and 2002, with Weah as captain.

It's not about a European coach, it's about a programme and a system

The team is bottom of their qualifying group for the 2010 World Cup and Nations Cup.

If they are eliminated, Hey is considering resigning, as Liberia would face almost two years without competitive football.

Weah is in the US to improve his education to further his dream of becoming President of Liberia.

But he says that if he was offered a post as technical director, he would take it.

"Definitely I would come and help. because the team needs help," said Weah.

"It's not about a European coach, it's about a programme and a system.

"Liberians need to come to their senses and realise that I'm a technical man, who knows the mentality and knows the team."
