Tanzania coach Marcio Maximo has signed a new one year deal to lead the Taifa Stars.

The Brazilian, whose contract was due to end on 30 June, had been offered a two-year extension but has only agreed to another 12 months.

The Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) made their offer after last week's memorable 0-0 draw with Cameroon in a 2010 World Cup qualifier.

"We wanted to continue with him for two more years, but he refused for personal reasons," TFF President Leodegar Tenga said.

"But if the team qualifies for the World Cup finals or the Nations Cup he will sign another contract."

The new deal is a direct result of Tanzania's impressive performance against the Indomitable Lions.

Maximo had come under increasing pressure from fans and the local media before the game.

"Of course timing is crucial, people were unhappy and things would have been worse had Cameroon beaten us," Florian Kaijage, a spokesman for the TFF, told BBC Sport.

"But after the good match against Cameroon everyone can understand if we offer him a new contract."

Maximo is also credited with steering the national team to the final qualifying round of the African Nations Championship.

The team will qualify for their first major tournament in more than 25 years if they can overcome Sudan later this year.
