Liberia rally means Senegal draw

Liberia fought back from a two-goal deficit to earn a draw against Senegal in Sunday's Group 6 2010 World Cup qualifying game in Monrovia.

Second-half goals from El Hadji Diouf and Cheikh Gueye gave the Teranga Lions the lead before Liberia bounced back.

Dieo William netted with 12 minutes to go to give the Lone Star hope before Olivier Makor equalised on 88 minutes.

The draw means Senegal now lead the standings on goal difference over Gambia with both sides on five points.

It was the first time the Samuel K Doe stadium had been used since 10 fans died watching Liberia play Gambia.

Football's world governing body, Fifa, imposed 'special measures' on the venue for the game.

Attendance was reduced to 75 per cent of the arena's official 33,000 capacity to reduce overcrowding while numbered tickets for numbered seats were used to limit ticket fraud.

Senegal though were unlucky not to win the game after El Hadji Diouf had a goal disallowed a minute after Liberia's equaliser.

The striker hit home from close range following a goalmouth scramble only for the referee to rule out his effort.

Gueye's goal was a fierce angled volley, after a wayward defensive header.

Liberia reduced the deficit when Dieo William drove a low volley which went under Sylva from eight yards out, after a cross found him unmarked and in space.

The equaliser came from what looked a cross from Olivier Makor after he played a short corner with James Zotiah before curling a 25-yarder into the top right-hand corner two minutes from time to spark scences of joy in the stadium.

Elsewhere in the group Gambia secured a surprise win over Algeria on Saturday.

Mustafa Jarjuh scored the only goal of the game, a penalty converted in the 19th minute.

Algeria are left two points behind the leaders with three games played while Liberia stay bottom with two points.
