Kano Pillars are Nigerian league champions for the first time
Kano Pillars have clinched their first-ever Nigerian league championship on the final day of the season on Sunday.
The championship was assured after a 2-0 home defeat of JUTH FC.
Musali Yusuf opened the scoring for Pillars after 28 minutes before Bello Kofarmata doubled their advantage 10 minutes later.
Pillars, from the northern part of the country, thus finished top of the 20-team table with 64 points from 38 matches while Heartland FC of Owerri were runners-up with 63 points.
Both teams will represent Nigeria in next year's CAF Champions League.
Third-placed Bayelsa United will feature in the Confederation Cup.
Insurance, Prime FC, Jigawa Golden Stars and Kwara United were relegated to the second division after they finished bottom of the championship.
