Fabisch quits as Benin coach

German trainer Reinhard Fabisch has resigned as coach of Benin, citing health problems as the reason for his departure.

His resignation leaves the Squirrels in a fix, just weeks before the start of the 2010 World Cup qualifiers.

The 57-year-old sought a two-week leave from his employers to have a spinal operation for a slipped disc in his home country last month.

But after the operation, Fabisch wrote to the Benin Football Federation (BFF) saying his doctors have prevented him from physical activity until July.

This prompted his resignation as he would not be available when the first four matches of the World Cup qualifiers are played in June.

Meanwhile, Benin sports minister Galiou Soglo has asked the BFF to propose a successor to Fabish as soon as possible to guide the Squirrels in the qualifiers.

Benin have been drawn in Group Two of the World Cup qualifiers to play Angola, Uganda and Niger.

Fabisch, who was in charge of the Squirrels for five months, led the country at the Africa Cup of Nations in January.

They lost all three matches in the tournament in Ghana.

His last game in charge of the squad was in March when the Squirrels were held to a 2-2 draw by a German select side in a friendly in Frankfurt.
