Malawi coach, Steven Constantine
Constantine has ended his 13-month Malawi tenure

Stephen Constantine has quit as coach of the Malawi football team.

The coach's resignation ends a sour 13-month relationship between the Football Association of Malawi (Fam) and the Englishman.

Constantine confirmed his departure in an e-mail addressed to senior members of the Flames.

"I have regretfully handed in my notice of resignation to Fam," he said.

"The problems are far bigger than me and I am not going to change the mindset or the unprofessional behaviour of many that are there."

The Englishman has been in Cyprus on holiday since his team were knocked out of the newly introduced African Nations Championship by Mozambique last weekend.

Fam chief executive Charles Nyirenda confirmed to BBC Sport that he has heard about the coach's resignation, but is still waiting for official communication from the coach.

"I hear he has resigned but my office is yet to get his official resignation letter," he said.

Constantine must serve a two-month notice period under the terms of his contract.

After becoming the coach of the Flames early last year, the team registered six back-to-back losses in both friendly and competitive matches.

Following this series of poor performances, Fam gave the coach a two-match ultimatum to produce better results.

He achieved this through two successive wins against Swaziland and Namibia in international friendlies.
