Vogts named Azerbaijan coach

Berti Vogts
Berti Vogts will sign a contract with Azerbaijan next week

Former Nigeria coach Berti Vogts has been appointed to take charge of the Azerbaijan national team.

The 61-year-old, who coached the Super Eagles at the recent Africa Cup of Nations, takes over from Macedonian Gjoko Hadzievski.

Hadzievski was sacked last year after Azerbaijan finished bottom of their Euro 2008 qualifying group.

Vogts, who coached his native Germany to the European title in 1996, quit as Nigeria coach last month.

The German quit the Super Eagles following the team's quarter-final exit from the African Nations Cup when they lost to hosts Ghana.

An Azeri FA spokesman said Vogts would sign a two-year contract this week.
