Mabizela banned for six months
Former South Africa captain Mbulelo Mabizela
Mbulelo Mabizela has been banned for six months
Former South African captain Mbulelo Mabizela was handed an effective six months ban for drug abuse after a test found traces of marijuana.

The former Tottenham Hotspur defender will be out of the game until the end of March and he was also fined US$6,900 after a hearing held by the South African Football Association on Thursday.

It is the latest setback in a chequered career for the 26-year-old, who made his international debut after just a handful of professional games.

He was signed by Tottenham after they had spotted him on their tour to South Africa in 2003.

But Mabizela failed to make the grade at White Hart Lane, despite scoring on his debut, and had his contract cancelled after a year following several disciplinary infractions, including missing training sessions.

He then spent a season at Norwegian club Valerenga but rarely featured in their championship winning season last year and was released this June.

Mabizela, stripped of the South African captaincy in 2004 after arriving late for a training camp, signed for South African champions Mamelodi Sundowns in August.
