Libya international Al Saadi Gaddafi has been charged with 'sporting fraud'.
The decision to charge the son of Libya's leader was announced by Prosecutor Sergio Sottani in Perugia on Wednesday.
But the specific details behind the charges were not explained.
The 32-year-old, who recently signed for Uefa Champions League contenders Udinese from Perugia, is to appear in court in November, said the Italian news agency ANSA.
Gaddafi tested positive for nandrolone after a Serie A match between Perugia and Reggina in October 2003 and served a three-month ban backed by world football's governing body Fifa.
