The United Nations Children's Fund, Unicef, has named Cameroon and Barcelona striker Samuel Eto'o Fils as a goodwill ambassador.
The reigning African Footballer of the Year, who was officially appointed for the role in Yaoundé on Thursday, wants his achievements to inspire
hope amongst disadvantaged children.
"I've known hard times, so I can say that there is no magic in life. Nothing comes easy," Eto'o said.
"There is nothing other than hard work."
Mariam Coulibaly Ndiaye, Unicef's representative in Cameroon, said the organisation chose Eto'o for their campaign because his popularity would help spread the message of healthy living to the youth.
Eto'o, who won African football's top individual prize in 2003, is the leading scorer in Spain's Primera Liga.
