Is Drogba value for money?
Ivorian striker Didier Drogba in action for Marseille

Got an opinion? Express it here. Each week we throw up a different subject to let followers of African football have their say. Some of your views will be read on Fast Track - the BBC's African sports programme.

English side Chelsea have paid US $45m to Marseille of France for Ivorian striker Didier Drogba - a record price for an African footballer.

The Elephants' star made a huge impact at Marseille last season, after his US $6m from Guingamp, as he scored 19 goals in the French league and 11 in the Uefa Cup.

But is he, or any other player at the moment, really worth US $45m?

No matter how controversial your views may be, use the form to have your say.

He is a quality player and should rightly cost that money. By comparison, all David Beckham does is cross and take free-kicks. Beckham's wife Posh is a star and has made him an icon, while Drogba simply lets his goals do the talking - and not his wife.
Brenton, South Africa

I'd spend US$5 million on Henrik Larsson and get better results. Chelsea appear to have more money than they can spend. Drogba is a good buy but I don't think his value has appreciated that dramatically. I'd say he's worth no more than US$20 million.
Lotana, Nigeria

Drogba is worth everything. He's proved himself a top striker - both at home and in Europe. He will fit perfectly into Jose Mourinho's system.
Mr Chimwemwe, America

Why do we Africans have a hard time believing another African is worth more than you think he is worth? Chelsea are not fools - if they are willing to spend that money, that is because they believe in the player's ability. I bet if Drogba were European, none of you Africans would doubt his worth, so stop hating and be happy for the young man.
Prince, a Nigerian American

I support this gifted footballer entirely - because last month I watched his performance in the match between Egypt and the Ivory Coast and he performed very well. I wish him a good future in his football career and for Africa especially, particularly his country.
Semiu Sallam, Egypt

Drogba has only had two years of relative success which, coupled with his late emergence at the age of 26, raises serious questions over the price tag. People seem to forget that he scored only 18 goals in the French league last year which is not the incredible tally everyone is making out, and let's be honest the French league is of a much lower standard in general than the English Premiership. His remaining 11 goals came in the Uefa cup which can only be described as the poor man's European tournament. I don't doubt he will score goals but I don't think he is worth the $45m price tag.
Simon Horwell, England

I think he deserves the price to some extent because he's such a brilliant player with pace, skills and vision.
Iniobong, Nigeria

Success in France is not a guarantee of success in England, considering the difference in the level of games in both countries. But Drogba has the potentialities to cope up even in difficult circumstances. For now, it is difficult to say if he is worth $45m or not - only time will tell.
Chidi Nwamadi, a Nigerian in France

He's definitely worth the money. He should have won the African Footballer of the Year for 2003 after being named best player in the French league. Eto'o's victory was a sympathy vote for Marc-Vivien Foe. Go on Drogba and break the jinx in Chelsea.
Emma, Nigeria

Drogba is an amazing player, and he is aggressive and hungry for goals. Like Chelsea, I would use my last penny on him!
Joseph Asamoah, Ghana

He is definitely not worth that amount of money, as he is only a finisher and doesn't work for his goals. Unlike the true African star at Marseille Ahmed 'Mido' Hossam, he has been the backbone of the team with a lot of assists, which have been overshadowed by Drogba's goals. Chealsea's original bid of US $33m seemed a reasonable amount for the striker.
Mostafa Allan, United States

Drogba has worked very hard to get to where he is at to date. He deserves all the recognition and money he is getting.
Paul Esheyigba, England

Drogba is worth this amount and if he was European no one would doubt this.
Cletus, Cameroon

Drogba is worth more than that, no striker currently has his pace, vision and style.
Benjamin David, Nigerian

I have watched and followed with keen interest Drogba's game. I think he is Africa's top striker. His value has really appreciated beyond doubt and I think he is worth the current price tag of about $ US50m. I must however say that the English game is very different from the rest of Europe and succes in France is not a guarantee for success in England. Look at El Hadji Diouf of Liverpool and Senegal for example.
Dr. Henry Abeiku Godson-Afful, United Kingdom

It is high time African players are put on an equal footing with their European counterparts. Didier Drogba in my opinion is in the same category as the likes of Beckham, Figo, Zidane and Thierry Henry. African footballers have a lot of talent and there is no doubt that Didier Drogba is worth the figure being quoted by Marseille.
Ebo Bhavnani, Ghanaian in the United Kingdom

US$50 million? This is absurd. Chelsea should just look elsewhere for equally good players at less than a tenth of this rather high price tag.
Buabeng, USA

He is not worth US $50m, I would rate him at closer to US $30m. He has proven he is a good goal scorer in the French league but could well fail to perform in a top league like the Premiership.
Jaafer, Ethiopian in German

No, I don't think that it he is worth that amount, maybe Marseille does not want to sell the player.
Michael Luchunga, Tanzania

NO! No player on earth is worth US $50m. Not even Maradona or Pele in their prime. Mr. Abramovich, please let me have the US $50m and I will buy an entire team that will win the treble next season.
Ike, a Nigerian in the USA
