Caf has welcomed Zanzibar as full members

Zanzibar will be allowed to enter teams in African club competitions from 2005 after Caf confirmed its full membership to the continental body.

However, Zanzibar will not be allowed to enter a national side in the African Cup of Nations.

The semi-autonomous island has in the past been recognised as an affiliate member of the Football Association of Tanzania (Fat).

The Zanzibaris were initially granted provisional membership at Caf Congress in Tunis early this year.

The Zanzibar Football Association's (ZFA) vice president Farouq Karim told BBC Sport that they have now received the confirmation from Caf.

"We have officially received a confirmation letter from Caf that we are now allowed to compete in all competitions organised by Caf except the African Cup of Nations," he said.

He went onto say that the government of Zanzibar has agreed to support the teams.

"The Ministry of Sports has assured us that Zanzibar's teams will participate fully in these competitions and the government will make sure everything is okay," he said.

"The government is trying to get a coach from Egypt, and the Egyptian government has agreed to supply us with a coach," he added.

The Indian Ocean island, which has 16 teams in its top division and two stadiums, has been participating in East Africa's Cecafa regional competitions as an independent member.

The next step for the ZFA is to get Fifa membership which will see them receive annual grants of US $250,000 as well as support through the Goal Project.
