Mido says he is not in a good frame of mind
Ahmed 'Mido' Hossam will not play for Egypt in their opening 2006 World Cup qualifier against Sudan on 6 June in Khartoum.
The France-based striker has advised Egyptian football authorities of his unavailability for the tie.
"He sent us a fax saying that he's not psychologically fit to join the national team," said Samier Adly, administrative manager of the national team.
Mido, who plays for Marseille, has faced harsh criticism from the Egyptian media since the Pharaohs failed to pass the group stage at the African Nations Cup in Tunisia.
His absence has dealt another blow to the plans of Egypt's new Italian coach, Marco Tardelli.
The country's top scorer Ahmed Bilal is injured and will not be back in action for three months.
Egypt are in Group 3 alongside Cameroon, the Ivory Coast, Libya, Sudan and Benin.
