Belgian club sacks Moroccan
Rachid Belabed
Belabed is no stranger to controversy
Moroccan Rachid Belabed has been dismissed by Belgian first division club La Louviere for assaulting a former journalist.

"Rachid Belabed said he was guilty of performing unacceptable and unjustifiable acts against Claude Moniquet," said the club in a statement on Monday.

The 23-year-old took exception to remarks made by Moniquet during a televised debate on terrorism.

Belabed hit Moniquet several times and accused him of being racist and an enemy of Islam.

The 23-year-old, who started his Belgian football career at Anderlecht, attracted adverse publicity when he disappeared without trace for six weeks last year.

A magistrate will determine on Friday whether Belabed, who has been arrested, will be conditionally released or kept in custody for the next one month.

If the player is tried and convicted for assault, he could face a two-year jail sentence.
