A first half hat-trick from Didier Drogba did the damage, the Guingamp striker destroying the Burundi defence in the first half hour.
Drogba bagged his first after just seven minutes, and netted again on 27 minutes.
He wrapped up the hat-trick just five minutes later, and the Burundians looked completely lost.
The Elephants refused to coast, however, knowing that in this group goal difference is likely to be absolutely crucial, with rivals South Africa also looking very strong.
Burundi's cause was not helped when, shortly after the break, they lost goalkeeper Ime Kitenge following a bad tackle from Elephants captain Duma Motzi.
The reserve keeper had barely had time to warm up before the ball was flying past him, Dagui Bakari getting himself on the scoresheet on 56 minutes.
15 minutes later he added another, and Anderlecht-based Aruna Dindene wrapped it up for the Elephants with 10 minutes still to go.
Two minutes before the end, Sadi Shabani managed to get a consolation for Burundi.
