Ghandour sees red
Gamal Al Ghandour
Ghandour disallowed two goals against South Korea

Egyptian referee Gamal Al Ghandour, who officiated in the World Cup match between Spain and South Korea, is threatening to sue a Spanish newspaper for libel.

The Spanish sports daily "AS" was said to have accused Ghandour of accepted a Hyundai car as a "gift" from Fifa vice-president Chung Mong-Joon.

The accusations, reprinted in the local newspapers, has caused a storm in the Egyptian football community..

"I never imagined that I could be the subject of such insulting accusations while officiating in the most prestigious football competition in the world," the Egyptian referee told BBC Sport Online.

"I am in contact with my FA, and we are studying the whole situation. I might go to court, based on legal advice," Ghandour said.

But Hamada Emam, vice-president of the Egyptian FA, said they would have to tread carefully.

"We are still looking at the whole matter. Using the word gift is a lot different from the word bribe.

"We have not reached a final decision yet, but there is a chance that Ghandour may take a personal decision on how he wants to proceed," Emam said.
