SA withdraw bid for 2006
![]() Jordaan wanted to negotiate an 'exchange' deal with Egypt
The South African Football Association, Safa, announced their withdrawal from bidding to host the 2006 African Cup of Nations tournament.
After Safa informed the Confederation of African Football (Caf) of its decision, six countries - Algeria, Gabon, Egypt, Cote d'Ivoire, Libya and Namibia - are left in the race. Safa boss Danny Jordaan had previously said they were considering withdrawing the 2006 bid in order to secure support from Egypt for hosting the World Cup in 2010. Fifa's president Sepp Blatter has said the 2010 World Cup will be held in Africa, but the procedure for selecting the host has not been decided. Caf's executive committee will announce the hosts of the 2006 African Nations Cup in September. |
