Elman FC from war-ravaged Somalia has recorded their first-ever win in the 28-year-old history of the East and Central African (Cecafa) clubs competition.

They defeated home side Zanzibar's Forodha FC 1-0 at the Amaan stadium.

Striker Issa Abdi Abushir emerged as the hero, scoring in the 56th minute.

Elman v Simba 0-0
Mlandege v Uganda 1-1

The win is special for Somalia, whose sport, socio-political and economic life has been crippled by decades of wars and internal strife.

The Somalis have the worst record in African football.

They lie in the 197th position in Fifa's country rankings - only five places from bottom.

In their first game in the two-week competition, Elman drew 0-0 with highly fancied Simba FC of Tanzania.

Meanwhile, the tournament organisers have slapped a $500 fine on Kenyan side Oserian FC.

Cecafa's spokesman Farouk Karim said Oserian gave troubles to the organisers by turning up for the event after previously announcing their withdrawal.

Karim said the hosts had incurred huge losses after cancelling hotel bookings when Oserian said they would miss the competition.

The hosts now had to meet extra costs for new accommodation and internal transport arrangements for the Kenyans, Karim added.

Oserian were allowed to play their first match against Ethiopia's Electricity FC.

Ceecafa has also banned Burham Msoma, head coach of Forodha, from sitting on the team's bench during the tournament.

The organisers said the coach "misbehaved" during a meeting with all competing teams before the event kicked off.

Rwanda's President Paul Kagame donated $60,000 and a new trophy for the tournament.
