Rwanda's hopes of having a team in the final were dashed after their two teams were defeated in the semi-finals.

Kenya's Harambee Stars beat Rwanda B 3-1 and Ethiopia beat Rwanda A 1-0.

The home fans were expectedly disappointed.

"God wasn't with us this evening," said one.

In the first match, Kenya's Maurice Sunguti opened scoring after seven minutes.

Rwanda's Mbusa Kombi Billy equalised ten minutes later.

Glass of beer

But in the second half, things turned awry.

Boniface Maruti got the second in the 56th minute, before Sunguti's second of the night.

Kenya's German coach Reinhard Fabisch said his players finally pulled their socks up.

"For once I can have a beer out of celebration and not out of frustration," he said.

After Rwanda B's defeat, the other home team was under pressure to perform.

Despite pushing the Ethiopians hard, they conceded the only goal in seven minutes, from a Bayou Mulu strike.

Third place

Ethiopia's game was a mix of the erratic and brilliance.

The determined Rwandans tried to turn the tide but their best was not good enough.

The pounding of the drums by the fans on the terraces could not inspire them either.

Twenty minutes from the end, Eric Nshimyimana was sent off to compound their woes.

The Ethiopians play Kenya in Saturday.

Before that, both Rwandan sides will battle for the third place.
