Burundi gave themselves a huge morale boost ahead of the quarter-finals of the Cecafa Cup, with a 2-0 win over Uganda.

Both sides showed a lot of fighting spirit but the Burundians seized the advantage early on with Kubi Banga picking up both his sides goals within the first 15 minutes.

After the promising start the Burundians, encouraged by chanting from the Rwandan crowd, put all their energy into preventing the Cranes from scoring.

Alex Isabirye, who notched up a hat trick in Sunday's game against Djibouti, tried in vain to redress the balance.

Uganda, who won last year's tournament will have to regroup before the quarter-finals starting on Monday.

Coach Leo Adra is expected to be critised for not having put more senior players into his youthful line-up.

Burundi's coach Yaoundé Kagabo praised the high quality of the game.

"Our team was very determined as Uganda beat us in the last two tournaments," he said.

"We surprised them at the beginning of the match and after that we tried not to leave any gaps so that the Ugandans weren't able to score."

In the other match of the day Eritrea and Somalia drew 0-0.

Eritrean coach Tekkie Abraha said his team had not played to the same standard as in the two earlier matches against Kenya and Rwanda.

"Our players were under stress," he said.

"But we look for the long term. We have brought young players to develop our football in Eritrea."
